W@POPL DinnerPOPL 2020

The W@POPL dinner aims to connect women PL faculty, post-docs and students. It is intended to celebrate achievements, small and big, and provide a low-pressure atmosphere to foster building one’s support group.

In particular, we aim to:

• Increase the feelings of community and belonging, especially among junior faculty, post-docs and students through positive interactions with peers and more established faculty

• Establish new connections and collaborations

• Create a culture of support, growth, and welcoming in the programming languages research community.

This will be the first W@POPL networking dinner, which will be held on Thu, January 23, 2020 at Palace Cafe. We are delighted to announce that Kathleen Fisher (Tufts University) has agreed to give a short talk followed by a Q&A session! You can sign up for the networking dinner when registering for POPL. Managing my life, my career, and the bumps along the way

In this informal, after-dinner chat, I will share with you my story: how I got where I am. In the process, I’ll peel away the shiny veneer so you can see some of the struggles I’ve faced along the way. My hope is that revealing a few of the bumps I’ve encountered will counteract any impressions of facebook-perfection you may have and encourage you as you navigate your own set of challenges. In the process, I’ll share a little bit about how I manage my time and decide what projects to take on. My remarks will be followed by a Q&A session.
